Blood Collection
To maximize platelet volume and potency it is essential to utilize the PomPac® tube cooling system and the PomCol® blood draw cooling system. Store both the PomPac® and PomCol® in the refrigerator until the time of surgery.
1. Remove at least four tubes from their packages and place them in the PomPac®. A maximum of 6 tubes can be drawn without needing to flush the line with saline.
2. Begin a blood draw with a 21-gauge blood collection butterfly. Once the needle is inserted, wrap the patient’s arm with the PomCol®.
3. While keeping the resting tubes in the PomPac®, individually remove one tube and begin to fill it. Once the tube is filled place it back in the PomPac®. It is essential that the blood draw happens quickly to prevent fibrin loss.
4. Once all the tubes are filled, they can then be placed into the DuoQuattro® centrifuge. Tubes must be placed parallel to each other to eliminate harmful vibrations.
The Process for PRF Difference
In the evolving field of regenerative medicine, Platelet-Rich Fibrin (PRF) has emerged as a pivotal autologous biomaterial, harnessing the body’s innate healing mechanisms. Central to the efficacy of PRF is the selection of appropriate blood collection tubes, which significantly influence the quality and quantity of the resultant fibrin matrix. This article delves into the advantages of Dr. Choukroun’s Advanced Platelet-Rich Fibrin (A-PRF) tubes—often referred to as “Red Tubes” or “Dr. Choukroun Tubes”—in comparison to traditional red top blood draw tubes. A particular emphasis is placed on the high vacuum feature of A-PRF tubes, which minimizes fibrinogen degradation by reducing blood draw times, thereby enhancing clot formation. Additionally, the role of the PomPac™ cooled tube holder in optimizing PRF clot size is explored.
The Significance of Blood Collection Tubes in PRF Preparation
The process of PRF preparation is intricate, with multiple factors influencing the final product’s quality. Among these, the choice of blood collection tubes plays a critical role. Traditional red top tubes, commonly used for serum collection, may not be optimized for PRF production due to their design and material composition. In contrast, specialized tubes like Dr. Choukroun’s A-PRF tubes are tailored to enhance the PRF yield and quality.
High Vacuum in A-PRF Tubes: Minimizing Fibrinogen Degradation
Fibrinogen, a soluble plasma glycoprotein, is essential for clot formation. The integrity of fibrinogen during blood collection directly impacts the size and quality of the PRF clot. Prolonged blood draw times can lead to fibrinogen degradation, resulting in smaller and less robust clots.
Dr. Choukroun’s A-PRF tubes are designed with a high vacuum feature, facilitating rapid blood collection. This swift draw reduces the exposure of fibrinogen to potential degradative factors, preserving its functionality and promoting the formation of larger clots. In contrast, traditional red top tubes may not possess this high vacuum capability, leading to longer draw times and increased fibrinogen degradation.
Comparative Analysis: A-PRF Tubes vs. Traditional Red Top Tubes
Several studies have underscored the impact of tube selection on PRF clot quality. Miron et al. (2019) conducted a comparative analysis of PRF produced using various commercially available tubes and centrifugation devices. The study revealed that certain tubes, including those from Salvin Dental, produced significantly larger PRF clots compared to others. This finding emphasizes the importance of selecting tubes specifically designed for PRF preparation to achieve optimal results.
The Role of PomPac™ Cooled Tube Holder in Enhancing Clot Size
Temperature management during PRF preparation is another critical factor influencing clot size. The PomPac™ cooled tube holder is designed to cool PRF tubes after blood collection, serving a dual purpose: increasing the size of PRF clots and enhancing the volume of plasma produced. By storing PRF tubes in the PomPac™ before and after blood draw, and subsequently placing them into the centrifuge, clinicians can achieve larger and more robust PRF clots.
The preparation of high-quality PRF is contingent upon multiple factors, with the choice of blood collection tubes being paramount. Dr. Choukroun’s A-PRF tubes, with their high vacuum feature, offer a significant advantage over traditional red top tubes by reducing blood draw times and preserving fibrinogen integrity. Additionally, the use of the PomPac™ cooled tube holder further enhances clot size, contributing to more effective regenerative outcomes. Clinicians aiming for optimal PRF preparation should consider these specialized tools to harness the full potential of autologous healing mechanisms.
